In this advert, the artist Tom Odell is promoting his album 'Long Way Down'. Therefore the first noticeable aspect of the advert is the choice of image, as the photo of the artist is the main focus as it takes up a lot of the advert. Using a large-sized image is an effective marketing technique to promote the artists career as it allows his target audience to see his face and remember it, creating an image for him that his audience will recognise as soon as they hear his name. Moreover, the alignment of the image is to the right; which is usual in terms of design and layout as it allows room for the crucial text that is needed such as: the artists name, the date the album is being released and in this case his winning of the brit awards 2013, as this will want the target audience to buy his album as it has been recognised by a commercial event and means many people have voted due to liking his music. The image of the artist has been taken as a shallow focus shot so that the setting behind the artist has been blurred, causing the artist to be the main focus. Therefore putting more emphasis on him making the audience remember his face more clearly. It is also effective to keep the image as simple as possible as there is not a lot occurring, therefore this matches the indie genre conventions of simplicity in both the music and the visuals of this particular genre. The artist is also directly facing the camera as it creates a personal feel; which would attract to the female target audience as they may want to be with him, also attracting to his male target audience as they may want to be like him. In addition, the artists facial expression is arguably seductive as his lips are parted and his gaze is direct and intimate.
The artists hair is tousled, which would attract predominantly to the female based audience as due to the genre, this would typically be the type of male they would be attracted to. The artists unkempt and quirky look of clothing he is wearing represents him as a quintessential indie artist, as they are typically know to go for the more rustic look. Consequently, the artists hair is tied up which represents him differently to the stereotypical masculine look. Therefore, those who see this advert and are attracted from less of the mainstream image, will appeal to the artist more and be interested in finding out about his music and therefore may and also go and watch his music videos.
The colour scheme used within the advert is neutral and rustic, therefore this would appeal to the audience it is aimed at as it is simplistic and dated looking, as these are the connotations of the indie genre. The use of the natural; in this case green and blue, reflects natural earth colours, opposed to bright and bold colours that you would expect to see in the pop genre for example. This colour used on almost all of the text is white which connotes innocence, reflecting the fact of the artists album. This will attract the target audience as some may be young females therefore their mothers may feel this album would be appropriate for them to purchase. Also the white writing against the neutral background makes the important text stand out. Despite that, the colour of the album is actually gold, which stereotypically connotes wealth, This links to the information provided near the bottom of the advert stating the album is an 'award winner from the Brits critics choice'. The use of the colour gold alongside this information is helpful in conveying the artist as positive and appealing to the audience, consequently making them impressed that he has won this award.
The size of the text in this advert is also important as it varies depending on what the content is. The size of the date of the album release is in the largest font and after that is the name of the artist and album. This is because this is crucial information, as with just glancing at the advert you can clearly see the information you need to know in order to purchase the upcoming album. All of the text has been aligned to the left so that it neatly contrasts with the image on the right hand side. This is effective as it fills the page so that it doesn't look empty but also avoids crowding the magazine advert and making it too overwhelming. Therefore the advert has been designed specifically so the name of the artist and the album has been positioned directly at the top, as it should be the main focus apart for the image of the artist.
